"THE IDEA OF THE FANTASTIC has a long literary history, going back to ancient times when writers of myth and legend “recorded” the feats of their gods and demigods. In a similar fashion, fantasy novelists of the 19th and 20th centuries have had their own influence on the larger culture. It can be argued that the works of Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, George MacDonald, and Edgar Rice Burroughs, among others, laid the foundation for the Golden Age of comics (1930s to the early 1950s), introducing iconic characters whose stories continue to be retold in the cinema today. Inherent in these stories is the idea of the hero becoming more than what he is."
